Please read! Milk supply builders????

Question

Hi, I have a question about nursing. My daughter is in the hospital right now. She has ti have a spinal tap done she's sick but we don't know what from. She's almost 3 months old, her birth weight was 7lbs.5oz and she currently weights 8lbs. The doctors are very concerned. And want me to substitute my milk. I don't want to. I Will if I have too but I dont want too. breastfeeding is a passion of mine and I have worked so hard to be able too. My breastfeeding journey has been more painful then me giving birth to her. I dont want to quit, I pumped when she was first born for a few weeks then she started latching, i was getting 6oz on 1 side. But here at the hospital I'm only getting 1 1/2-2oz. Idk if its because I'm stressed and worried. I didnt eat anything yesterday because of everything going on. I'm trying to build it back up. So I wont have to substitute. What can I do to get more milk FAST. My breastfeeding journey relies on it...

First thing - you need to eat and drink water. You need fluid and calories to make milk. I eat oatmeal with Pb and a banana every morning. Get some rest. But EAT and DRINK.

Drink a ton of water, like when you were pregnant and eat oatmeal every day. Look up power pumping to build supply. I’m not saying don’t breastfeed but that is very concerning. For now you may want to consider formula so she gains quick. She should have gained much more by 3 months. Now I’m not trying to sway you one way or the other but supplementing temporarily won’t stop you from being able to breastfeed later once everything is figured out.

If it we're me, I'd be supplementing. She's only gained 11 ounces in three months. That's not nearly enough. Latch her or pump and giver her whatever you get, and then top her off with a little formula. She clearly needs more nutrition and so do you. Drink water and eat lots of healthy fats. Giving her formula now doesn't mean you have to stop breastfeeding and it's certainly better than her not getting enough to eat.

I think at this point you are going to have to supplement. Your baby should have gained much more weight by now.  If the hospital you are in has a lactation consultant, you can talk to them about your supply and continuing breastfeeding. But for now you should very strongly consider supplementing to get some weight on your baby.
