Should the high school have told their students?

Yesterday at my local high school a student brought a loaded firearm to school. There was no email, and definitely no lockdown. Students and parents had to learn about this even from the local police department on Facebook. Should the school have told their students? Why or why not?

I don't know if they should've announced it during school hours the day the person bright a gun in. Only because if they didn't, it would've probably incited a panic and caused more harm than good. I'm happy they dealt with it before the firearm was used for harm. But everyone should've been made aware at the end of day or when the threat was neutralized.

I know they probably didn't want to cause a a scene and scare people but they should have been informed at some point, after everything was taken care of.

Both should have been informed at the end of the school day. To me it seems obvious (without any extra info) that they took care of this situation quickly & quietly to ensure panic didn’t break out.  I can appreciate them not wanting to scare students or disrupt their day, but like I said, everyone should have been informed at the end if the day.

I was always informed of events like this when I was in school. This was before the time of frequent school shootings but kids brought guns to school at least a couple times a year. The school was about 400 people grades 7-12.
It is smart to inform at least parents because chances are it's their guns being stolen and brought to school.

We had a student show up with a loaded firearm and they told the teachers to tell the students (there wasn’t a lockdown. It was going to happen at an event which they only found out a little bit before the event but it was supposedly said that it was just a threat. I left early because I didn’t feel safe) which they then called the homes with a robo-call and people were getting picked up. 
Then recently our basketball team had a really good winning streak and someone threatened to bomb the place. Extra security and Bonn dogs were involved. They robo-called home about the situation. So I guess telling both is a valid thing to do

I believe the school should have informed the parents and students. I don’t think they should have done so right away it sounds like they had the situation handled. 
Something similar to this happened when I was in 6th grade. A friend of mine brought a gun to school to show our group. (No one knew he was gonna do it till the day he actually pulled the thing out in front of us) a noon duty aid saw what he did and brought him and the gun to the office where they discovered it was an air soft gun. 
The school never notified our parents. The school didn’t go on lock down. It was just a normal day. They didn’t even question any of us in the group. 
The kid didn’t get suspended, just lost 2 recess privileges.
