What age do you think is appropriate to introduce a child to a smartphone/tablet?

Welp my kids are 11 && 8 and they do not have them 🤷🏻‍♀️ not because I can’t afford them but because i would rather have kids would draw,write and play out side 🤷🏻‍♀️ that doesn’t work for every one but it does us

My daughter has had a tablet since she was 18 months old 🤷‍♀️. She is almost 3.5 and she loves to watch her educational shows and it was no time before she was counting, saying shapes and colors and her alphabet. She saw a speech therapist and the therapist used her tablet to help her get over her delay. I know most parents are appalled at the idea of children having electronic devices but where I live, kids are getting tablets/laptops in elementary school. I would rather my kid be knowledgeable about how to use them and be safe when on it. To each his own.

The official recommendations (at least in the US) are no screen time until age two. 
Most of the brain is busy developing from 0-3 and the brain learns best from actual experiences instead of screens. 
So for these reasons, I would say it’s probably best to wait until 4+.

My oldest is 4. She only gets to use my phone on occasion if I’m in a long doc appointment. But usually I just bring a book or coloring for her. My kids do not use phones/tablets at all. I’m just not a fan of it. Kids these days need to learn to be bored. They don’t need to be occupied at every moment.

My son wasn’t interested in tv/tablet until 14/15 months. So that’s when he started. He’s 2 now. He knows sign language cause that’s what he watches lol and knows numbers and some letters

My daughter is almost 2 and has zero access to any sort of device like that. She has zero screentime and we never give her our phones or tablets. Those aren't toys. Those are mommy and daddy's and she knows that. These rules won't be changing any time in the near future.

Idk how it is in other countries but in the us , atleast in ny , there’s tablets in schools now so it’d be stupid to think she’s not going to be around them . My both my nieces have them and one is 4 one is 8. The 4 year old goes on abc mouse and is learning her colors and shapes that way vs the work books they sell at Walmart . My 8 year old niece downloaded the apps that they use at school so she’s able to practice her math and she’s also able to read books on there . As for my baby, she’s 8 months and i let her only see my phone if it’s a dire situation like if she’s screaming in the grocery store then I’ll put on her show for about 5 second until she self soothes and then turn it off . I wouldn’t mind her using a tablet when she’s about 2 for times when she wants to watch tv on a trip, or a doctors office . As for at home , i rather her play with toys and read books. All about moderation
