Talking?

Just wanted to see if any of your one year olds are talking much? Or saying anything besides the normal mama/dada/baba. Someone made a comment to me the other day about my daughter not talking or saying much. She just says mama and dada and babbles a bunch but no other words. So now I feel like she’s behind or something. I know there’s a big range of normal but just wanted to check in and see what words everyone else’s little babes saying 😊

Hi! I am a speech therapist mama so i can provide a little insight. There is a really large range of “normal” as you mentioned. By this age comprehension is much stronger than expression (talking). Your babe should understand common familiar words (such as bottle, no, bye bye, up, etc) and they should have social graces (eye contact, joint smiling, laughing with purpose and joint attention). What you’re describing seems great! Babbling is a great precursor to one day talking. By 15-20 months more words begin to emerge and that can be a better prediction of “lateness” - which i hate to classify that way- all kids are on their own timeline! There is limited research but from my practice i see that often kids will have a strength in an area - so early walkers can be a little later with words. Not to say that’s always the case! Some things you can to do encourage talking: labeling EVERYTHING you do (ex. Mama is washing the dishes now, look here is the soap and sponge, scrub scrub scrub!) lots of books, singing, minimizing screentime (really no screens before 18 months), getting down on the floor and playing. Sounds like you’re doing wonderfully!

My son says mama and dada of course, recently he’s been saying “yah” a bit and even an occasional “okay”. Not perfectly of course but he uses those things when they would make sense like if I ask if he’d like his sippy cup or if he’s hungry. So I do believe he is speaking a bit, it’s touch and go and only on his terms of course. He turned 1 on March 11

My son doesn’t talk at all. Once in a while we get a “dat” but not consistently.

I used to feel like that too.. I talked to my doctor and she said not to worry too much about talking. To focus on what they understand. Out of nowhere she began talking. She says her name, “addy” “agua” (water) “titi” (bottle) “papa” (grandpa) “mezz” (Grammy) “ahpa & ahma” (grandma and grandma on her dad’s side). “Kiko” (her uncle) “Nina & nino”, “Amen” She can count to 3 in Spanish. She says uno and points her little finger up showing she’s one. She knows her animal sounds if you ask her, (cow, dog, duck, cat, bird). She also knows her body parts and points to them ( mouth, head, hair, nose, eyes, feet).

My son has one word. (Born the 25th) he says Bye and waves. 
I feel like he understands a lot. He seems to understand: come here, No, mama, dada, bite-bite. But he doesn't say any of those 🤷🏻‍♀️ he goes back to occupational therapy for a check up in September so we will see.

I've been wondering this too lately. My son says Mama, Dada, Izzizz (our dog Izzy) and the tries to say a few other things and occasionally copies what we say.
I'm worried we're hindering his speech progression as he will point and grunt when he wants something and is very expressive in body language etc, that we know what he wants/means and we just without thinking will give him whatever without making him verbalize properly.

He says hi, bye, doggy, go, balloon, momma, dadda, ball, umm (yum) thank you. That's all I can think of right now. He doesn't understand thank you but he likes to say it when we do haha. My first son only had like 3-4 words (including momma and dadda) at this age and he's talking up a storm now at 2. They talk when they're ready haha.😂

My daughter says dah for dog and that’s it. Everything else is gibberish.

At this age their receptive language takes off, it’s perfectly normal that they don’t say much (if anything). I’m sure your LO understands a lot.

My son is a year & only says dog dog. I know he can talk, but he doesn’t... he knows what no means, shakes his head no, waves bye, points, etc. but he won’t talk at all 😕
