Sororities/ fraternities?

What’s the point of joining these while in college? And if you’re in one what’s your experience? What did you have to do for initiation?

I’m absolutely in love with my sorority. I joined for many reasons. First, I get to be more involved on campus in various ways. Second, I’ve gotten to meet so many great people and I’ve made so many friends. Third, there’s so many volunteer opportunities and way to make an impact, especially through your philanthropy.  As to my personal experience, I’d like to preface that it’s different depending on your university and such. I went through formal recruitment so it was about 4 days total. The first day, I went to all the sororities and spent 30 minutes just getting to know them asking questions and such. Then I ranked them 1-5(my campus only had 5 sororities). They also ranked everyone and then the info got put in a machine and each sorority invited x amount of people back. You could be invited back to up to 4 sororities. I got invited back to 3( Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Phi Epsilon, and Phi Sigma Sigma). The second night you spent 45 minutes in visiting each. This night is also philanthropy night and you learn about each philanthropy. You again rank and the same thing happens. Day 3, you could be invited to 2 sororities max and this is pref night where you see a tiny bit of ritual and just talk more to them. You spend an hour in each room. I got invited back to Sigma Sigma Sigma and Phi Sigma Sigma. At the end of this night you make your final choice. You fill out a Maramba which declares your final choices. You could list both you went to on pref night if you could see yourself in either or you could “suicide bid” and only put your top choice. This is what I did. I listed Phi Sigma Sigma and that’s it. The next morning I got a call saying I got a bid(since I suicide bidder I knew it was from Phi Sig, but if you didn’t suicide bid, you don’t know who it’s from) I had to report to a place later that day. All the sororities came in to find out what new girls they got( the only people who knew are the recruitment chairs) then most sororities throw a party to celebrate. That raps up that process. Then I had to get pinned and go through the new member process before getting initiated. I can’t tell you about my initiation because it’s something we keep secret. But I can promise there’s no harm done. It’s not something for everyone, but if you’re interested you can always go to say one of recruitment to test everything out and if you decide it’s not for you, you can drop the process. Greek Life isn’t just a club, it’s a lifestyle and it’s a commitment. But I don’t regret it at all. I love being a Phi Sig! I really found my HΦMΣΣ!

A lot of people join Greek life for different reasons. I joined because not only did I have no friends my freshman year of college, I have never had more than one female friend at one time in my life. I also thought it would be a great way to get more involved both on campus and in community service. So far I have had a good experienced, with a few not-so-good ones mixed in. However, campus size may effect your experience; the organizations may be more exclusive, you might never meet everyone in your chapter, and your dues and fees will be more expensive. Also, on my campus, the sororities take hazing very seriously while some of the fraternities are notorious for hazing. So if you decide to join and if are forced to do anything you do not want to do, notify whoever it is you need to immediately. In terms of initiation, of course there are secrets that can’t be shared but you perform various rituals specific to your organization that should in no way scare or harm you, physically or mentally. Overall though, Greek life gives you the opportunity to meet some amazing women who will act as a strong support system for you and become your close friends hopefully for a long time. You’ll do fun sisterhood events and events with other organizations, etc. Whatever you do, don’t join because someone tells you to, or because your friends do it, make sure you do it because you want to! Greek life isn’t always for everyone! GL HF

My sorority gave me a home away from home. I got homesick and it really helped having a bunch of girls I could go to for support. If one of us was down, we’d take each other out for ice cream (we had a TCBY right down the road lol). I lived in the house my sophomore year and it was like having a big sleepover every night. So fun! I can’t really tell you what I did for initiation but it was nothing scary. My sorority was really against hazing. We couldn’t even have a scavenger hunt because someone said that was considered hazing lol.
