Should Autism awareness day / month continue?
Today (April 2nd) is World autism awareness day. Every year there is great debate over whether or not this should still take place and be 'celebrated'. Over the years I've heard several different stances on it and I'd like to know what you guys think.
This is always a huge day for my mom, both of my brothers have been diagnosed with Autism as kids. Things were VERY different back then so her views on it seem pretty different than many modern day views.
Some people are looking for a cure. Some are spreading awareness. Some are looking for acceptance and inclusion. Others feel that this is nothing to be celebrated, as it is a disability that greatly effects their lives (and family members). Some feel it's degrading to have a day / month dedicated to something they feel doesn't need a cure or 'fixing'. I've seen many viewpoints. Some say everyone knows what autism is at this point and we need to put our resources elsewhere.
What do you think? (sorry this was thrown together guys not the plan but my son woke up right as I started typing lol)
