As a teenager, could you talk to your parents about sex?

Question

As in, could you comfortably have a conversation about sexual things and talk openly about it? 
Also did they ever give you "the talk"?

Mine never gave me the talk (my mom didn't even explain what a period was until I was halfway through my first one) , I had to look away or fast forward through sex scenes in movie basically until I turned 18 and moved out. They took bedrooms doors when they caught us masterbating and smashed the computer when my brother followed a popup link to porn. That's why I have so much empathy for younger girls on this app that have questions or need advice. I also had to rely on the internet for sex ed

my mom explained pregnancy, sex, and periods to me in simple terms when i was in kindergarten. i was a very curious kid. starting when i was about 13 she put condoms in a cabinet for me and my brother if we ever needed them. when i was 15, she wanted me to start birth control so i did. none of these things made me start having sex, i did when i was comfortable. in my opinion, teenagers will have sex whether you “enable” it or not and the most important thing is knowledge and safety.

I've never gotten the talk from them, never had any conversation with them about sex or anything sex related. When I started my period I was just sort of expected to know what to do etc from the basics you learn at primary school. Everything I know is from what I've read online. I discovered porn when I was 10 (I can't remember details but I remember it being on Instagram), a couple years later I found erotic fanfictions, so I knew of sex from these things. With my friends, I'm very open about sexual things, and if I'm honest, I don't like how much of a taboo it is in my family life. One of my friends is incredibly open with his parents and I wish I was more like that. The closest I've got to a conversation with my parents about sex is when they found my Wattpad account when I was 13 and saw that'd I'd read sexual fanfictions - even so, there was no actual conversation, just a few comments about "thinking about if what you're reading is appropriate". Or the time when they insisted for my door to be open the time I had a male friend round (despite the fact I'd had a girlfriend round for a sleepover previously, and I'd had a boyfriend round with the door shut - believe it or not, more happened with the boyfriend than the friend...). I don't particularly see how reading sexual fanfictions was bad though - in my opinion, as long as what a teenager does is safe, consensual and doesn't harm anyone, then it's okay. I don't see how reading erotica would harm anyone or damage me. All teens will explore sex at one point or another, and the main thing is that they do so safely. But that's just my opinion. As I'm still a teenager, almost 16, I do think it's important for me to be able to talk about these topics with my parents, so I really don't like the fact I feel like I can't. I want to start birth control, but I feel unable to talk to them about it. I envy those who are able to talk to their parents about these things, even if the conversations are awkward.

Never really needed to ask since middle school and high school i had sex ed and my high school advisory teacher wanted our group to go to her if we had any questions or issues. Best advisory mom💕

I could have, but never really did. My mom is a high school health teacher, so she is super open and comfortable talking about sex, but I never really have been because I was sexually assaulted at a young age. But like I told her when I became sexually active, which was 18 and I told her about the birth control I got on and asked her questions about my cycle and stuff. But she wanted to talk about that stuff when I was like 15 and asked if I wanted to get on birth control and I was not down. Even at 18 I wasn’t mature enough for sex.
