Erythromycin ointment has become standard practice to prevent chlamydia & gonorrhea infections in the baby’s eyes during delivery which can lead to blindness. They started making this standard because many doctors don’t swab for these infections prior to delivery. If you are sure that you haven’t been exposed to any STI, you can refuse this with minimal harm to the baby.

I won’t be opting in for baby #2 because my son ended up with pink eye and a clogged tear duct 5 days after birth.

My hospital checks for any kind of STD when they draw blood on the day of delivering .. just to make sure that you are STD Free . So regardless I’m all for it .

I am confident I don’t have gonorrhea or chlamydia and won’t get it, so I don’t really see a point for my baby, but I probably won’t refuse it.
