Cofiwch Dryweryn 🔴🏴
I’m just gonna preface this by saying I am so angry over this, this has really hit close to my heart
Backstory: Capel Celyn was a village in north west Wales which was flooded in the mid 1960s in order to provide water to Liverpool and the Wirral, which is a part of another nation. Campaigners fought for a decade to have to village saved from plans to flood it but they unfortunately failed. What now remains of this village is a small portion of derelict wall, which for years has had red paint and ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’ on it. This translates to ‘Remember Tryweryn’. This is a soft spot for many Welshman, especially after having our culture, language, and villages destroyed for centuries as it pleases and benefits the English. It has since become a very important unofficial memorial
Earlier this year it was vandalised after ‘Elvis’ has been spray painted on it
It was restored, but a matter of days ago it was vandalised again
So the people took it upon themselves to restore the mural once more, painting over the vandalism
And now this has happened. Vandals have struck again in a matter of months but this time they have demolished the top portion of what little brick remains from the village
This has infuriated many people, including myself, as for years there have been calls to have the wall protected and to be an official memorial. Efforts thus far have not succeeded, yet a little bit of Banksy graffiti in Port Talbot was instantly protected
So: should memorials like this be protected when they have such great meaning to the public?
What protections should they get?
What should the punishments be for those who damage these memorials?
