I have been in the theater community my whole life. The actors appreciate applause. Depending on the tone of the musical, it is usually appropriate and encouraged to clap at the end of a musical number. There's often a pause in the show to account for it. Laughter is also appreciated if something is funny. Audience feedback and enjoyment is one of the reasons actors do live theater.

When a song comes to an end, yes. Oftentimes the actors pause or the lights dim giving the opportunity for applause without disrupting the show.

When I was at school doing drama we went on loads of school trips to shows and there were a couple where we were asked to refrain from clapping until the very end. Whereas other shows encouraged it, so I think it just depends on the show or venue

It depends. I’ve been to plenty of broadway musicals where they clap at the end of big numbers. Orchestras and plays seem to have different protocols

It really depends on the venue, and the feel of the performance. Some places specifically ask us to hold applause until the end, others there is clapping intermittently. I’d say the latter is more common here.

Yes it is. The performers EXPECT something like that to happen and so they are trained to hold their lines and wait for the applause to end before resuming. This way, nothing is missed

Yes. I saw Hamilton, which includes some audience participation.  However, people clapped about every other song. It was encouraged and it’s fine. People clap after every song in our show choir numbers. I like it
