Will people shorten the name August?

We are still deciding on baby boy names and August is in the running. However I don’t want people to shorten it but alsonam realistic... do you think August is a name that is highly likely for people )grandparents schoolmates etc) to shorten to augie gus etc?

Most likely people will start calling him Gus or August, but if you come out from the beginning and say his name is August not Gus or August you should have less problems. Once he gets older though, it’ll really be about how he introduces himself. We are naming our son Arthur James and we absolutely do not want him to be called AJ until he’s old enough to decide if he likes that nickname for himself. My husband doesn’t even want me calling him Artie(I still most likely will call him that) because he wants our children to be able to decide as they are older what they’ll go by. Our oldest is Patrick Glen IV so it’s a bit harder for him, but I still only call him Patrick or LP(Little Patrick) when I need to make sure people know who I’m talking to. My husbands grandparents gave him the nickname Packy as a child and I think it ruined nicknames for him. 😂

I’m sure people will want to call him Auggie (which is totally cute, by the way), but if you want them to call him August, just keep repeating that. It may take time to stick but it’s up to you! Our son is Benjamin and we have called him that for two years and just now started shortening it to Ben. You just have to be okay with letting people know.

My sons middle name is August. And my FIL calls him Auggie. I HATE IT. Auggie to me sounds like a dog’s name. But the man lives like 8 hours away and has refused to call my boys by their given names since day one. (Calls my oldest CJ. Which are his initials.) He gets miffed when they don’t answer him but literally nobody calls them that. The new baby’s name is Daniel. Not Danny. Not Dan. Daniel. So I guess there is always someone doing stuff like that. The question is can you handle it.
