INFORM ME

Lauren

Quick note: I put this under controversy because I had no idea where to put this! Like if we need a miscellaneous category!

Alrighty, so I'm white... And I just realized something... I know nothing about Native American culture, customs, life, history (except for the fact that they subject to gruesome genocide by fucking assholes among a thousand other things), or anything! I'd love to be informed by how survivors or current Tribes, etc, are like today and their way of life! Please educate me... I know I can look stuff up, but I'm terrified of looking at site that looks legit then it being completely bullshit and I end up being an asshole or offensive or a buttload of other things. So yeah... Anyone from or who knows about Tribal/Native American cultures, ways of life, discrimination in they suffer from assholes, stuff like that in any form or fashion, please share ALL THE KNOWLEDGE!!

There are several books you could read if you don’t want to use the Internet. There’s nothing wrong with the internet, you just have to triple check facts and cites sometimes. 1. The Earth is Weeping2. The Other Slavery : The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in the America’s3. This Indian Country You could also look up Native American history by different states.

Thank you! I will look into this! I play this game called overwatch, and there aren't any Native American or Tribal characters and I thought it would be awesome if I could create one! However, I don't want to contribute to racist bullshit and end up offending anyone! I'm very detail oriented and it has to be perfect. I want to be sure if I say something it's correct. That or I'll correct myself. So I want all the information I can get. I normally do my own research, but I know so little that I had no idea where to start!

I’m Native American, but sadly I wasn’t raised with a lot of knowledge of my culture, I know a lot of basic stuff though, but honestly if you’re really interested maybe see if there’s any tribes near you and see if they have any pow wows going on this summer, I go to mine every year and it is a very educational thing to go to, I don’t know about other tribes but mine invites the whole community to come and join us.

It’s basically a celebration with dancing and food, my tribe does it for three days and we have someone volunteer (usually my cousin) to go into the woods by the pow wow grounds and keep a large fire going for those three days straight as a symbol of our celebration. And the pow wow is held in this giant field and we all kinda form this circle, the drummers in the middle, dancers forming a ring around that, and then people watching next, and then on the outer edge of the ring is people at stands selling food and homemade things, like jewelry and walking sticks, and clothing. The dancers wear their traditional Native American clothing that’s really beauty to see, specially since it’s almost all the way homemade. It’s a perfect opportunity to come and see the traditions and learn more things.

I’m AlaskanBut not Alaskan NATIVE Most of the natives there live in villages and live how they’ve lived for years and years. (Eating muktuk, which is whale blubber, seal oil, etc) there are many kinds of native/Eskimo in Alaska to even name.
