I worked at a men’s unit so can’t speak for a women’s unit. To make it simple it’s loud and smells bad. It’s like babysitting 4 year olds that are bigger than you. As far as the job goes it’s like most some days are harder than others. If you work at a men’s unit you’ll be writing cases on them jacking off to you pretty much daily till word spreads that you write cases and don’t tolerate it. Actually at a women’s unit it’s prolly the same thing bc even the male officers have written cases at the unit I was at. Staffing is always an issue it will never be fully staffed. Pay depends on what state you work for or if you work for a federal prison so I’d say go to the website they have pay listed. So you’ll have to compare it to what the pay usually is for your area.

I know correctional officers dont get paid enough for the job. That's why many places are understaffed with correctional officers.

My neighbor is a correctional officer. There's days that are extremely tiring, both physically and mentally. Dealing with inmates that try to harm themselves or being understaffed. He just switched from overnights to days.  I think he's a lot happier now since he has the evenings with his kids instead of sleeping all day and working all night.   I'm not sure about the pay, that's a subject we've never talked about. Lol.
