Would he think that I’m saying “I love you”?

I said "I love you" to my hubby BEFORE we even started 'dating' and I felt really embarrassed because all of our friends were around us. It's normally just a natural thing for me to say that when saying bye to someone before leaving, but I said it on accident and meant it. He was a good sport and said "I love you" back to me not to make things awkward in front of our friends. Well, when I left, I was texting him apologizing like crazy and he said, "Oh. So you don't love me?" I had to explain everything and he admitted that he said it back for two reasons. 1. Not to make things awkward because literally everyone was staring at us and 2. He actually does love me. Haha. Funny how some things come about and work out.
