What’s the difference between an apostle and a disciple?

Answer

We all are called to be disciples, to “go and make disciples of all nations”, a disciple is someone committed to teaching others about Jesus and teaching them to be disciples as well. The purpose of being a disciple is the equip His people for works of service to edify the body of Christ. (The Great Commission in Matthew 28)
Apostles are different in that they followed Jesus directly during His time on earth. When they chose a new apostle after Judas’ betrayal, they had requirements to be an apostle. They must have been with Jesus the whole 3 years He was among them (an eye witness to His baptism, the Father validating His person & work, have heard Jesus’ teachings and been present for His healings/miracles, and witnessed His sacrifice), they must have seen Him resurrected (walking, talking and eating with them after resurrection). Of the 120 followers noted in Acts- only 2 people met these requirements. (Acts 1) 
Paul was then an exception because he was hand picked by Jesus, and taught directly by Jesus.  (Acts 9; Galatians 1) 
Now is where is can get confusing. Some churches believe that current day apostles can exist (called continuism/continuationism), while some believe that apostles must follow this biblical evidence of requirements (called cessationism). So depending on who you ask- some will say apostles today do not and can not exist based on biblical teaching, some will say they can. If this is a question of yours, I’d urge you to dig into the Bible & find a sound mentor you trust to teach you more about it.

All apostles are disciples but not all disciples are apostles. 
Apostles are teachers and messengers of the Gospel. It’s a spiritual gift. Disciples are followers of Jesus in general and could have a different spiritual gifting that’s not being an apostle.
