Sun protection??

Question

Sooooo it’s finally getting nice (I’m in New England) and I want to start spending more time outdoors with my babe. She’s three months old, and pale AF (just like her momma!). How do I keep my lass protected? I got her a sun hat, but what about arms, legs etc? Took her for a walk yesterday, and I had to keep stopping to cover her ankles. Any tips??

From what I understand at least the first 6 months the ideal scenario would be to keep the sun from them. Easier said than done when summer is coming up. But the idea would be to keep them in the shade as much as possible (also when they are in their stroller) and to have them wear (lightweight) clothes with long sleeves and long pant legs and a sun hat. Sun screen should be avoided in the first 6 months if not 12. 
This may work well when your baby is born in the fall and it even worked OK with my first who was born in July. But with a February baby and months of warm weather coming up, I have my doubts. So I, too, bought the sun screen with zinc. I guess the way it works is that there are minerals in the lotion that “mechanically” block the sun, rather than chemicals doing it. That’s at least what I gathered. I tried the lotion on my 3-year-old and she looked like a ghost, but no sun burn. 😄
So my plan is to keep this in the diaper bag and cover him as much as possible but whenever it is not possible to cover his entire body, to use this sun screen only on those parts of his body that I can’t protect otherwise.

My doctor said it was ok to use sunscreen as long as it's the zinc oxide kind(non toxic), as long as you aren't putting it on hands(because those usually go in mouth), and don't use it like every day

I would default to your ped on this one because it honestly depends on the baby. Ours gave us the okay because I have a history of skin cancer, and our little guy has my fair skin and light hair/eyes and they said it’s better to put a little sunblock on than to let him burn. Just try to keep baby in long pants/sleeves and get a baby sun hat! We’re from New England but live in VA now so the temperature difference has been rough.
