Need advice on the patch

People who have the contraceptive patch or have had it I’m 6weeks 6days postpartum, last Saturday i thought my period had finally started i had brown jelly discharge sorry tmi and was a lil crampy so i put on my first patch thinking yea this is day one of my cycle. A bit more of the same and now my so called period is non existent so I’m not sure if it actually was one and if not will my patch still protect me from pregnancy? Have i used it wrong? As it does say wait till first day of your period 😩
