Naming drama - what to do when a friend lays “claim” to a name?

Question

My husband & I have not agreed on any names so far, and finally today I mentioned a name I’ve liked for a while & he loves it too. Bad part is...it is a variation of a name that is one of my best friend’s maiden names which she has “claimed” for her future son, even though 1) she is nowhere close to having kids right now (she’s actually seeing a therapist about it), 2) she lives in a different state, and 3) what if she has a girl & not a boy? Idk - naming is so hard so I’m wondering if I should steer clear of it or keep it on my list since so far it’s literally the only name he & I both agree on. 
I just remember that Sex & the City episode with Charlotte getting mad at her friend for “stealing” her name. But also - this name is not the exact name, it’s a variation of it, if that helps!

I would use it. Names are hard, and if you both love it, go for it. It's not the same name, and even if it was,  theres no guarantee she will ever be able to use it

My youngest is named Robert Allen after mine and my ex husbands dads. 
One of my exs friends flipped out about the name like screaming and cussing saying it was her grandfather's name and we had to change it. 
I laughed and said Its my kid and i can name him whatever i want.

On Easter we knew the gender of the baby and I told my cousins the planned name and one said her sister wanted to use that name (she lives in NM), and that I better talk to her. The cousin in NM is getting married later this year and who knows when she is having kids. I am still using the name

Their child is not going to be your child’s constant shadow, classmate, neighbor, etc. their whole life. Hardly anyone will know they share names after a few years. Life moves on and so do people. If you absolutely love the name and know it’s 100% your favorite name, go ahead and use it. The friendship/relationship matters more than a name and if they ditch you for liking the same name, well, that’s just stupid. I can understand them being a little disappointed but no one can “lay claim” to a name.

I mean it doesn’t sound like you are actually using her name so you should be fine. 
I know a lot of people think it’s ridiculous but I do get pissed when friends want to use a name I‘ve told them I’m going to use. Some people just don’t care but I don’t get it. If a friend tells me they decided on a name I‘d never even consider using that same name. There are so many names in the world.

i had this problem, me & my cousin, who is my absolute best friend, love the same girl name. & i told her i was gonna use it & she got so mad at me. & after a few weeks & her asking what names i liked i told i still liked the original name & me & my boyfriend were having trouble coming up with a new one we could both agree on. she eventually came around & said since i’m the one that’s pregnant, if i really wanted to use it i could & she said that’s fair since she isn’t pregnant or even anywhere close to be pregnant since she isn’t trying. 
if you love it; use it. there’s always somebody who’s gonna be mad, but it’s YOUR child to name, not theirs. 😊

Long before I was even pregnant with my first my brother adopted a little boy. They had a list of 3 names and after they named him I mentioned I was glad they didn't pick this one bc that's my hubby's grandfather's name and he's always wanted to a name a kid after him. End of conversation. My brother then called me a week later and told me I wasn't allowed to use that name and they would be "really disappointed" if we did. I was livid. They weren't even sure if they would adopt again and it would probably be a girl if they did, yet here they were laying claim to a boy name. And who knows if I would ever even have a boy. I told him I couldn't make any promises but I understood where he was coming from. We didn't end up using that name but it's now 4 years later and they aren't adopting any more kids. Because of this bs we didn't tell anyone our name options when we were pregnant.

Same thing with my best friend and I but she already said she won’t be mad if I use it. She admitted that we are the same age and she doesn’t even have a boyfriend and I’m pregnant and married so I get first dibs.

I’d use it. Our best friends use our boy name choice when we were pregnant with a girl. I love the name and I’m glad they chose it. If it’s a variation I’d use it. Especially since she’s not pregnant and in a different state.
