Not just a cold

Dawn

My Lexi has had a runny nose all week. Not a big deal usually, she gets it right before she cuts teeth. Yesterday morning she started to sniffle and sneeze a bit. We thought she was coming down with a cold. We went out to eat when I got home from work and she was her usual happy self until about 15 minutes into dinner.

She started getting fussy, I check the time, it’s close to her bedtime so it was to be expected.

We get home about 9:30, she goes to bed no problems.

Around midnight I hear her fuss and I go in and give the bink she couldn’t find. Start to go back to my room and she’s up again. So not like her. I get her back to sleep for a half hour and it happens again. This time she has her bink and is rubbing at her eyes and screaming. I can hear her wheezing and she starts to cough. Sounds productive so I turn on her humidifier and rub some baby Vick’s on her chest. She falls asleep for another half hour then wakes up screaming bloody murder.

I bring her to bed with me and she feels hot. My husband asked what was wrong and my response was, I think she has a cold. I lay awake all night watching her as she coughs and wakes herself up and screams then sleeps. After about an hour my husband yells at her to shut up so I take her with my blanket into the living room and we try to sleep on my recliner. Neither of us slept well at all and my husband felt bad and came out to see us.

I told him I didn’t like the way she was breathing but as she had been crying a lot we dismissed it and called the doctor’s office.

He gets her an appointment for 8:40, tells me to go to bed that he will take her.

He called me at 8:50 telling me to hurry and get there because they will be taking her to the ER by ambulance soon but he didn’t tell me why before he hung up.

So I dress quickly, find out he took my car and I had to search for his spare key, get in his car and the fuel light comes on. Not enough gas to make it to the doctor. The two minute drive to the gas station took ten minutes because everyone decided to not know how to drive today. Fill up and get on my way. Speed limit is 60 on a normal day people drive 70 and 80 were driving 30 (for real not an exaggeration) in light traffic and slamming brakes on for NOTHING! I’m freaking out and yelling and asking God Why he hates me because that was just ridiculous.

Finally make it, receptionists tell me without even askin that they are still in room 3.

I walked in and my baby is back to being my baby.

I’m like wtf? Doctor walked in at that moment and said that when she got there her breathing was so bad she could see everyone of her ribs, she was extremely sleepy and her oxygen levels dropped to 90 and she did not believe she would respond to the breathing treatment at all.

She responded like a champ! She was given a steroid shot and another breathing treatment and her oxygen levels came back up so we were allowed to go home.

Doctor said she tested negative for croup and rsv but whatever virus she has had caused bronchitis.

We were sent home with a nebulizer and told to give her three treatments today, two to tonight. Treatments every four hours tomorrow one tomorrow night and Friday only as needed.

She’s not 100% but definitely on the mend. She hates the treatments though. We are both exhausted and emotionally drained.

Glad we trusted our instincts when we did!
