Picking baby up?

Question

My family and friends love to tell me NOT to pick baby up when she cries at night, and to just put her dummy back in and pat her back to sleep.
But, I can’t do it. I can’t leave her to cry or not pick her up and cuddle her when she’s crying. Am I going to make her dependent on me for comfort if I don’t do what my family suggests?

Ignore them!! Babies can't even self soothe until like 6 months old!! If you want to pick that baby up and rock her back to sleep, do it!! I have a 10 day old newborn that I nurse to sleep because she won't take a bink. My oldest is 3.5 and she took a bink as a baby and I still rocked her to sleep at night. And she's the most independent toddler!!

Ignore this advice! Babies/toddlers become MORE independent once they have a secure attachment figure and know they can depend onto that person.

You can't spoil a baby. Pick her up, give her what she needs/wants. It teaches her that she can rely on you and that her needs will be met. Self soothing will come in time. Snuggle your baby. She won't be a baby forever.

I’ve never listened when people said that to me. She’s my baby I’m not gonna ignore her when she’s crying and needs me. Nowadays it seems like cuddling, comforting or even holding your baby is a no-no cause “you’ll create bad habits” 🙄 I always comforted my daughter and held her when she cried at night now at 6 months she might whine, not cry, for like a couple minutes before putting herself back to sleep 😊

Around four months you can try the pacifier first but if that doesn’t soothe her then absolutely you should pick her up. Younger than that yes she needs your help to soothe.

Depends on age and needs. Trying to simply replace the pacifier as a first step is not necessarily a bad thing and some infants respond well with patting. Picking them up to soothe them isn't necessarily wrong either though. It depends on what the baby needs at that time.

She's your child! Do what you feel is right. My sister was told the same thing with both her kids and guess what. My 4 year old neice is so independent she gets mad if you help her do anything and I mean anything. My 9 year old nephew on the other hand is so dependent it's unbelievable. He can't even wipe himself or tie his shoes. It just depends on the child not on how much you baby them. My son will be held when he cry's and will be rocked to sleep if he wants it ( sure he won't because when I rock now he wakes up).
