I passed this- what is it? Blood clot?

Gross photo warning.
My period came a couple days late, with some of the absolute worst pain I’ve experienced with a period (back pain, cramps, sore breasts etc.) I have passed blood clots frequently, but nothing this big before (size is hard to distinguish in photo.) Any idea what causes this? How to prevent heavier periods? I am planning to follow up with my doctor.

Some people are just very prone to clots and it is usually not a cause for concern. If you are concerned about the pain etc as well definitely contact a doctor - they may suggest some sort of birth control that can lighten your periods

It’s a clot. I get those all the time on my period. Just as big too! No need to worry
