When to teach baby things?

When is the right age to start teaching my baby not to grab at the dog? He’s 9 months so he’s in the super grabby phase, and I don’t know how to teach him not to grab the dog and to be gentle with her??

Start now. I just showed my son how to be gentle by simply holding his wrist and showing him a petting motion. And then just by having him watch me and correct him everytime you see him pulling.

Now.  When you see him do it go over there and show him how to pet the dog.

My ten month old grabs the cat and I go over and show him with his own hand how to pet her and say “be gentle “ he still grabs her but he’s started just open handed patting her, he’s catching on pretty well.  Gotta start now but showing

We used the word "gentle" with our baby from day 1. I knew she didn't understand, but she would eventually. I mean if wasn't day 1 that she was grabbing, but if it did occur, just the simple message and remove the hand. Sometimes, as she got older we added "ah ah!" If we saw she was hurting the animal. She is very gentle with our dog and cats now at 18 months, and is a great animal lover. 
Note: used gentle because "nicely" was already the command for the dog to be chill/gentle with someone...hahaha. so encounters at first were "gentle, nicely, gentle, nicely" lol
