Nothing went according to birth plan!

Vanessa

I was scheduled to be induced Tuesday, June 4, at 39 weeks with my little girl. I was being induced due to AMA (I’m 40). I had the easiest pregnancy-no morning sickness, great blood work and exercised up until the day of my induction. The plan was a drug free, vaginal birth and I was reading several books to prepare for induction and how to still labor drug free. At around 38 weeks, I started having a lot of mucous discharge and figured labor was coming. I was hoping I would go into labor before the induction happened so I could better manage the pain. Fast forward to the Sunday prior to induction. I woke up with contractions and wasn’t feeling that great. Contractions were sporadic but became consistent enough that I took 1/2 a Tylenol. I still wasn’t feeling well and took my temperature and realized it was 99.3. My mom finally convinced to call my doctor bc I still was having a lot of discharge, contractions were coming more constant and I had an elevated temp. The on-call doctor talked to me for 10 seconds but says go to L&D. Hubby and I take quick showers, throw our bags in the car and head to hospital. Once there, they check me and tell me I’m 2 cm and the contractions aren’t strong enough but they would see me tomorrow for my scheduled induction😐. I’m a little frustrated but okay. We get back home and still having contractions but try to go to bed. The next morning i wake up and still have contractions and tons of discharge but my temperature is normal. I start the day normal and hubby and I hit the gym. I walk my 2 miles and do my light weights and I’m ready to go back home and sleep. We get back to house and i sleep until about 7pm. I wake up and I have an elevated temp again of 99.7. My induction was scheduled for 12:30am and I was to call an hour or 2 before hand. We get some things together and then go get our final meal before the hospital. By this time it’s 10:30, I’m having pretty regular contractions and wasn’t really able to eat bc of the pain and just wasn’t hungry. We call hospital and they say call back at 11:30-I’m super irritated but..call back at 11:30 and they don’t have a bed ready for me yet!! They said they’ll call between 1a-4a when they can check me in. Im soo mad now bc I don’t feel good and contractions are strong. We decide to go to my parents house and wait there as they are only about 10 min. from the hospital. I try to sleep through contractions but can’t with pain and constant peeing. I finally get a call at 3:26 asking me to come in by 4:30. I wake my husband up to let him know and start mentally preparing. At 3:30, I get up to go to bathroom to pee. As I’m peeing, I notice how long I’m peeing for..odd. When I stand up, I’m like did my water break, but I’m like no I was able to stop the flow, so I thought. All of a sudden, water is trickling down my leg and I look in the toilet and I see greenish liquid-omg, my water broke and is that meconium😮😮? I call for my husband and tell him we have to go now. We get in car and get to L&D and tell them water broke and it was green-everyone seemed confused but not concerned. I get checked in, and checked and I’m at 3cm. I told them I did not want Epi, and they were fine with it. Contractions are going well (manageable)and my sister and her young daughter met us in our room. I’m still gushing fluids but again, no one is concerned. All of a sudden, around 8am, I feel a big release of fluids and then the contractions got real!! I’m not a yeller or big curser but that morning, I began dropping the F bomb in front of my niece and morning/yelling. I’m like, forget what I said, I need EPI ASAP!! I have intense pain in my back and feel the need to poop. My sister gets nurse and my husband is just looking at me, scared, lol. Nurse comes in and tells me likely I’m feeling pain bc baby is sunny side up and that they needed to get her turned before I could have epi-fine!! Do whatever to get her turned so I can get out of this pain!! Well, I have to get her turned!! She tells me I need to get on all 4s and experience 3 contractions...WHAT?! I’m in pain-get me the epidural now!! My nurse and sister help me get on 4s and go through these moments. At this time contractions are about 2-3 min apart and hurt! I get baby turned, now we just have to wait on anesthesiologist. They FINALLY show up and I get the epi. Relief was within 5 min and felt so good that I will never be anti drugs again! But now..I’m shaking and cold. Ooh, that’s normal, I’m told after epi. They take my temperature and it’s slightly elevated but not over 100. They check me and I’m at 5cm-yay!! My mid-wife comes in shortly after and says she thinks I’ll be pushing by noon-yay!! Everyone leaves and I continue to shiver away but I am feeling no pain (still slight pressure though). Nurse comes back a little while later and I’m still cold and shaking. This time she takes my temp and it’s 101.4. I think she gives me Tylenol and disappears again. I try to sleep and when I wake up again still cold and shaking. They bump up room temp and take my temp again, now I’m at 102 and baby’s heart-rate is very elevated. They call doctor and she says give me penicillin to bring down fever. I’m now feeling urge to poop again (it’s about noon). They check me and I’m still only 5cm! How??? Doctor says if my fever doesn’t break, I will have to do c-section. I don’t think much of it bc I’m like, surely it’ll break with the antibiotic. She comes back at 1pm and I still have fever, and baby’s HB is still 170-180. She says either you have to be at a 10 now or we move to c-section. She goes to check me and see my bloody show and says maybe you’re ready...nope, still at 5cm! Omg, I’m having a c-section, never in a million years did I think I would ever have one! But I couldn’t freak out bc I was too concerned for my baby, so I say-do what you need to do, I trust you! She hands me some paperwork and my sister puts some make-up on me and they wheel me off. It’s about 1:20pm. At 1:45, I feel a tug and a pull and baby girl is out!! Dr says hubby you want to look and he’s just like omg..then I hear her cry, and I’m like omg that’s our baby!!! They suction her and put her on my chest and I can’t believe it-she is beautiful with a ton of hair!! They let us skin to skin for about 6 min and then say she has to go NICU bc she ingested the meconium and had a 101 fever when she came out. Hubby goes with her and they stitch me up. About an hour later they bring her down to me and I breast fed for the first time! She did about 40 min and it was amazing. At 5, they bring us all up to our room. NICU comes up shortly-they began to tell me she swallowed a lot of meconium and fluid that they suctioned out and they’ll need to give her a round of antibiotics to be safe. Her fever broke right after delivery but that also didn’t help anything. I’m still fine, I’m just in love with this little girl. Well later, pediatrician comes up and starts talking about abnormalities in her WBC and needing to do cultures and more lab work. Now I’m freaking out, but she says she’ll keep us updated. Baby is still in room with us but they’ll bring her down for her antibiotics. Around midnight, Pediatrician calls back and says 2nd round of blood work shows great WBC count but other cultures aren’t back but she’s okay, prob has an infection. The next day, more labs and cultures and different pediatrician says her numbers are improving but some are still elevated..long story short, baby girl has to stay a few extra days to do an extra round of antibiotics but other than that, she is perfect!! Ryanna blessed our hearts at 1:45pm on 6/4, weighing 6 ‘14 and 20 inches. Talk about love at first sight, she is everything I could ever wanted and so excited to be her mommy🥰🥰. I learned that day, that it’s okay for things not to go as planned. The only thing I asked of God was to give us a healthy baby and let me come out of delivery okay-he gave us both. Welcome to the world Ryanna! Mommy and daddy love you!
