pumping over breastfeeding

my lo was born a whole month early, he came out weighing 6 pounds 1 oz. his latch was horrible because i have flat nipples and i was so engorged when he was born so he couldnt get his little mouth over nipple and areola. i still tried and he wasnt getting it because he lost so much weight by the time we went to his first appt. from 6 pounds 1 oz to 5 pounds 10 oz. and i was scared. then his doctor suggest we go to get his bilirubin levels checked because he looked yellow and sure enough he was at 25.2, so we spend a day in the hospital with him under lights. they told me they wanted him under the lights at all times so they gave me a pump so i can pump and give him my breastmilk through bottle. the whole day we were in the hospital he gained all his weight back. we left the hospital weighing 6 pounds 2 oz. so as much as i want to breastfeed, i feel as though pumping is best for my lo until he gets older and his mouth can get a bigger latch. sometimes at night i get him to latch if i squeeze my nipple in his mouth and he really wants my breast but right now for his health, pumping is best. i just did whats best for my son.
