Do genetics play a part in whether or not you conceive multiples or is it totally random?

If women on your maternal side have had fraternal multiples (babies that each came from their own egg) it is more likely that you will. The trait that is inherited is the tendency to release more than one egg during ovulation. Identical multiples are actually the result of a mistake during cell division,  which is not heritable.

My cousin (on paternal side) is the first girl to be pregnant with twins in my family. She's 24 weeks with fraternal. I'm 12 weeks with identical, so no genetic influence on me. Only fraternal is passed down- just means you're more likely to drop more than one egg
