What does it mean to “ tear “ during labor?

I give birth in 3 months and i just read a status on facebook of a girl talking about how she tore from her vagina to butthole and i never knew such thing. i am terrified 😳..

i had a second degree tear & it was no joke. I literally felt it ! i didn't get the epidural , so i felt my baby tear my vagina. 😭

First and second degree tests are most common. First degree is a tear in the perineal skin. That type you may or may not need a couple stitches it just depends on the OB. second degree tears deeper into the muscle. 3rd degree tears to your anus. 4th degree I’ve seen like once in my 5 yrs as a labor and delivery nurse and it was by far the worst. An episiotomy is possible but those aren’t routinely done. You can also get a tear on your clitoris, where you pee...lots of possibilities lol

I had a 3rd degree tear and it wasnt that bad in my opinion. Stitches healed quickly and I was good to go in 6 weeks like normal. Just had to keep the area nice and clean.

You're skin can tear from the bottom of your vagina downward, or it can tear upward toward your clit. I've even heard of a couple women that had tearing to the sides as well but that's really rare. I'm pretty sure that 99% of women tear somewhat during birth but usually it's like 1st or 2nd degree. I'm not sure how far down I tore but I know it was barely a second degree. I didn't even feel the tear happen or anything afterward and I never felt the stitches at all. They didn't bother me while I was healing except for the first poop(that's worst than tearing). Do some research on how to care for your stitches afterwards and make some icicle pads, you'll be just fine
