Spouse joining AirForce , good or bad idea?

Question

I am 4 months pregnant and my fiancé has been contemplating joining the AF. Is this a good or bad idea? Obviously I don't want to be away from him for so long. Has anyone gone through this? How long are they away for before we can live together on base wherever he's stationed? I'm so confused.. This is still up in the air, just want to get opinions and advice.

I personally think very bad idea... Not when a baby's coming. It's an extremely hard life . But ultimately a decision you need to make together

I think it's an awesome idea. My SO was in the army when we first met and for the first year and a half of our relationship and I loved it. I really miss it now lol you should be proud of him :)

Okay. I just went through this a year ago. I wasn't pregnant and we were newly married. So everything was rough already. I think its a great idea for you. You will have medical covered. And will be able to give birth to your baby around your family before moving to your husbands permanent base. And depending on what his air force job is and how long training is he might be able to come visit while baby is born. My husband was gone 6months. And it I'm not going to lie it hasn't been 100% easy. But I think it will be a good thing financially for your growing family.

My husband is in the navy and it has opened up so many doors for us! I think it's a great idea!

I am an Air Force  wife going on 13 years. It isn't a bad idea at all. I have also been through 9 deployments and no they are not easy but you get through them. I am grateful for the military because of the health care, the financial part that is there no matter what. Military is good for beginning families.

I can't speak specifically toward Air Force, but my husband joined the Navy. He was supposed to be away only for 4 months for basic training and A school. He developed stress fractures in both knees and was delayed graduation 6 weeks. Plus A school was actually 12 weeks for his title. All told, he was away 7 months. I would have been extremely upset if I was pregnant when he joined especially if it meant missing the birth of a baby.

I would suggest waiting until after your baby is born. Only because your husband will have to go through basic training and tech school. Depending on how long his tech school is, he could miss the birth if they don't grant him leave. My husband is in the Air Force though and it does has some hard times, but it has given us stability as a young couple. Talk about it together and see what's best for your family.

It can be a great decision for your family but talk it through. A recruiter can tell you length of training etc. and how it could play out for you and your husband.  But as with all military, it could change at any time. I know several people that went in when their spouse was pregnant and things went just fine for them. I would really recommend talking about it a lot and taking your time on making the decision.

I dont think its a bad idea depending on when his basic training would be. They have a delayed entry program which can take up to a year before he goes through basic. It is a decision that you should both make together because it is an adjustment. My husband isnt in the air force but he is active duty military but he was already active before we had children. You have to be prepared for weeks and months away from each other. As far as being stationed goes it usually depends on where they have open billets so you can pretty much go anywhere. My best advice to you is to research it thoroughly and you BOTH go to meet with the recruiter together so you can ask any questions you may have. Military life isnt for everyone, thats why i say make sure you know what you are getting into before making your final decision. The pay isnt that great but the benefits that come with a long term military career are. Do your research and decide from there.
