Purpose of promise rings?

Not dissing. I’m just wondering about the purpose
Isn’t it just like an engagement ring. Like a pre engagement ring? Why not just go with the engagement ring? 
Whenever I’ve seen promise rings, it’s a promise to eventually be engaged. However, why not make that the engagement ring?

Basically for relationship that are too young. They are promising, but also saying they are too young or not in the right place for actual engagement.

I got one when I was 19 (from my now husband) and got engaged at 22 and had a long engagement and got married at 26. I think it was really sweet and a way to keep each other close since we both went away to different schools and was a promise to be together and eventually get married. I still have mine and wear it on my right hand occasionally.

We got one 6 months after we met, just because we feel it's a bit too soon for our family and friends to actually get engaged. We'd be judged for rushing.
So we bought a cheap set of rings for fun, and they're our promise rings. 
I don't mind what people do as long as it makes them happy.

Saying they promise to love you, but had a guy give me one and cheat on me. I personally don’t believe in them anymore.
