I'm trying to understand a friend's feelings for a guy that she likes.

I can so relate to the other side of this. When I first started dating my boyfriend, my friends were like, "what do you see in him??" And I couldn't explain it. Looking back, I guess it was because he was smart and funny and no one else had ever made me feel so safe and loved. Later I realized I owed no one any explanation. You like who you like!

Attraction can mean a number of different things. But what one person finds attractive in someone, another may not feel/see it. So I would say it varies and may be difficult for you to understand what your friend sees.
