Metformin for gestational diabetes

Maria

Hi all! I'm currently 11+3 and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes due to a slightly high fasting number on my 2 hour glucose test last week. Since then my fetal maternal specialist has had me testing 4 times a day. Fasting in the am and then 2 hours after every meal. My fasting time has been continually over 95 which is my limit. I'm due to see the nutritionist 2 days from now. Today I called in to give my readings since last weeks diagnosis for the first time. 20 minutes later the nurse called me and said my specialist was concerned with my fasting numbers and called in 1000mg of metformin daily to my pharmacy and I should start it today. Everything I've read indicates a smaller starting does or a gradual building up to 1000mg. Is this a high starting dosage? I've also read about horrible side effects making women feel awful. Hoping for some more information or if anyone can share their experience with this medication. This is my first time with GD and I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure our baby boy is born as healthy as possible but I haven't relaxed and can barely sleep since finding out last week. Thank you for reading!
