Has anyone ever reacted to iv fluids?
Yesterday, I was sent to the ER by my midwife for dehydration and a fever of 102.6. I was there for HOURS before actually being seen, shivering and contracting in a wheelchair in the triage area.
Anyway, when they did FINALLY start the fluids my midwife sent me for, I had a horrible reaction to them! My blood pressure was so low the machine couldn’t read it, my blood oxygen crashed, I felt like I couldn’t breathe, my heart rate was in the 140s, alarms going off everywhere. They stopped the fluids and gave me an antihistamine and I was fine again within about a half hour.
The one nurse insisted it was pure coincidence as “nobody” reacts that way to iv fluids. The doctor was less convinced that it wasn’t directly related to the iv, but because of my reaction, I had to be evaluated for a pulmonary embolism (nothing thank god!!!)
Then they dosed me up with zofran and measured my water intake for the next few hours because they were afraid to try the iv fluids again.
Has anyone had a bad reaction to it before? I had no other meds prior to it or mixed with it so we know it wasn’t that.
