How long is baby in Infant car seat?

This is just one of my many silly FTM questions but I am looking to get the Chicco key fit 30 car seat and it has a weight limit of 30lbs, but realistically how long is baby in an infant car seat? Trying to make since of spending $200 on a car seat that will only be used for a short while.

I like the infant seat because of the portability. They will fall asleep in it so often that is easier to move the whole seat to a stroller, into the house or restaurant, or from car to car with extra bases. With a convertible seat, which will last you much longer of course, you have to take baby out of the seat every time you want to move him, potentially waking him. And you will have to move the seat from car to car or buy more than one. By the time baby outgrows the infant seat, he will be on a more wakeful schedule, so less carseat napping. FYI, car seats expire after 6 years due to plastic decay, so you're going to have to get a second carseat or booster at least once, so you may want to plan ahead.

Also think about the size of your vehicle . This was our problem, so we had to go with convertible . Infant car seat is too big to fit in our car so we got the Chicco nextfit.

With our first he stayed in the infant seat till 6 months then we moved to a convertible seat. He stayed rear facing till after he turned 2. We plan to do the same with our next one.

We switched to a convertible rear facing seat around 6 months. I like being able to get the infant seat out but once he was sitting on his own it was easier to just get him out so we switched over.

You should get the one that can be turned around front facing when the time comes,  i regret not have gotten one of those, could have saved a lot of money

Five years ago,  mine was outgrowing his around 11 months, but he stayed in until 12 months. Then I moved him to a forward facing. I know the new recommendation is rear facing until 2 years, but it's not a law in my state. As far as weight, 30 lbs is about the size of an average 3 year old.

Depending on how big and how fast your baby grows, usually between 6months-year. My daughter is really tall, she out grew her infant seat by 8months before having to get a convertible rear facing carseat.
