Can you refuse a catheter if you are opting out of an epidural?

I don’t think they do one if you don’t get an epidural.

Yes! You can refuse. With my first daughter I had an epidural and still refused the catheter - the nurse was not happy but I’m also a nurse and I knew I could refuse. I didn’t refuse to be difficult but due to a prior terrible experience with a catheter. My second daughter I had a c-section and I said as long as they put the catheter in while I was numb and had it out before I could feel it then okay. ♥️

You can refuse anything, always. And I don’t know of why they’d catheterize you in normal labour.

The only reason you get it with the epidural is because you're unable to walk to the bathroom or feel the urge to pee.

The catheter was legitimately the most annoying part of my birth experience lol. I was so annoyed they wouldn't take it out, I was fine to walk and they told me when I could walk to the bathroom they would remove it. But they wouldn't even let me try for hours. Very irritating

If you don’t get an epidural you won’t need a catheter. But it’s really NOT a big deal. You are numb when they put it in and remove it.  Pushing a baby out of your vagina is a lot bigger deal than a small flexible tube going on IMO.

If they have to give you iv blood pressure meds, then you can’t get out of bed. That’s the only other reason I can think of besides an epidural that you would need one.

I did with my first but they wouldn’t let me with my second. I think it depends on the doctor and the hospital. 
Personally, I felt that catheter with every contraction and it was incredibly painful. They finally took it out when I was in tears begging because it hurt so bad.......and I may have threatened to do it myself if they didn’t lol I’ll go without the epidural this time if they insist on a catheter, I won’t let them put one in.
