What to do, job offer
I just finished my PhD and had my first child within the past year. I have been teaching for my university via online classes since he’s been born. I go back to campus in the fall to teach 2 days, and will teach 1 evening online from home. The drive is 1 hr 15 min each way.
I just got an offer from an Ivy League school to teach one year, starting this fall. It is a 1.35-2 hr drive each way, 5 days a week.
The first option, my son would be with his dad the 2 days I’m on campus.
The second option, we are figuring out. Do I commute 4 hours a day? Do we rent in the area and come home on weekends? We have cats. We would need sleep and eating arrangements for baby if renting. Do I find someone on care.com? Do we do daycare?
I’ve been my son’s 24/7 caregiver since he’s been born. It’s been almost more exhausting than finishing the dissertation. the thought of leaving my baby 5 days a week makes me sick. I don’t need to for the money, and I have a 2 day a week schedule that enables me to be with him for so much time while he’s little.
What do you think? I’ve worked so hard, and the prestige, experience, and money would be awesome. Not sure if it materially benefits my CV more or not. To be a Dr., work at an Ivy League school; it is my career dream.
I’ve also waited a long time to be a mom, though, and never thought I’d be hardcore working while my child(ren) was/were little. I have the ability to work at any point. We financially do not need me to take the job. I love where I work now, even if it’s less money.
What would you do? Would you work less hours so you could be your baby’s primary caregiver? Would you take a prestigious job, even if it’s 1 year, that could make you stand out for future jobs? Would you commute driving 20 hours a week or rent? I feel like time with baby under 3 years is so developmentally crucial....
