Do you tip when you pick up food from a restaurant?

Like, a Chinese restaurant? Not a fast food place like McDonald's.

I dont. If I go sit down, yes, because the waitress/waiter was doing me a service while I was there. If I pick it up what am I tipping them for? For handing me my food?

Yes, but not as much as I’d tip if I were dining in. Usually about 10%

No. Only if I order a drink while I wait

When I worked in a restaurant I was the cashier and the carry out prep. So everything from salads to rolls to drinks deserts and any sort of dressings or condiments were prepared by me. It would get crazy at times having a dozen orders to prepare at a time. I always appreciated a tip because someone had to make sure everything was correct for your order and carry out wasn’t as simple as what most would think. So I think a few dollars shows a lot of appreciation regardless if you sit down and eat or not.

And please for god sakes if you’re ordering a lot definitely tip those poor people I’ve seen 500 dollar tabs in to go basically catering get tipped zero after spending so much time getting stuff together

To go people at restaurants make the same 2.13 dollar tipped minimum wage because it is customary to tip on food. They prepare your food and all the trimmings and provide a service so yes, tip a few dollars. They have to time everything and execute quality control just like you’re dining in minus having to pour drinks it’s a very similar process.

As a server, please tip! It doesn’t have to be the same as if you were to go in and sit down but that server gets taxed on there sales and have to pay income tax on it as if they got tipped just the same as serving the table. So if you don’t tip the person who took your to go order they actually lose money. Uncle Sam wants a piece of the pie no matter what.
