Should I get a new or used car ?

Question

I’m 19 and in college, I have a job I have been working at for a year. I really want a car and since I have no other bills I can afford one. Should I get a new car and pay down on it since I’m young or get a used car. Please give me advice no negativity this will be my first car and I just want to make sure I’m making a good decision. Also share experiences below in the comments of which one worked best for you.

Dont ever get a brand new car. I'd you can financially afford it I'd say get a used car from a dealership so it comes with a warranty. Remember if it's on a loan you need full coverage insurance so make sure you account for that

If you are getting a cash car. Hire a mechanic to look it over. I personally would go that route so itll be paid off and you can stack money. Also, the insurance will be less. When you get a new car it loses value when you drive it off the lot. Then their is the whole negative equity when you want to trade it it. New cars are status symbols, they dont hold value. Make sure to go to different places and get your own person to look the car over.

a new car will lose its value the second you drive it off the lot. You can find an amazing used car with all the features you want by going to a dealership, CarMax, or using car guru, tru car , etc...  A dealership will work with your budget and everything you're looking for and will find cars that they can even ship to them so you can purchase it. So I definitely would look at a used car.

You can get a couple year old car that’s like brand new for literally half the price if not more that a new one. It’s almost dumb to buy a new car tbh because you can get a like new used cars for SO much cheaper

Brand new cars lose their value as soon as you drive off the lot. You will never be able to resell it or trade it for what you owe. Buy used from a dealership to get the best security on not getting a “lemon.” Dealerships almost always have some kind of inspection they put all their cars through. Certified pre-owned go through even deeper inspections. If you buy from a private seller, they won’t disclose anything that’s wrong with it and you could end up spending more fixing than what it’s worth. If you choose to buy privately, I’d recommend taking it to a mechanic and having them do an inspection on it before completing the purchase.

I got my little 2017 Nissan Versa from the dealership for about 10k with about 36,000 miles on it. It’s usually about $23,000 out of the factory but this was a rental car. I highly suggest that you look into used cars, specifically ex rentals because usually (I could be wrong) they have low mileage.

I got a used car for my first. 2008 Jetta, has two previous owners. Just make sure you have someone that knows cars inside and out to look it over and test drive it. My mileage is a little high but it runs great🤷🏼‍♀️ but you always take the chance of being lied to or finding things out about to car. Mine ended up having a shattered cv axel...thank god my boyfriend and his family works on cars or I’d be in debt😅 In my opinion I wouldn’t get a new car if you’re still going through school

I was 17 when I bought my first car. Brand new. It was a base model and the payments were monthly, 0% interest, and I had money for a down payment. I don’t regret it at all. I’m 25 and still drive that car, paid it off years ago. I never had to worry that something would surprise me by breaking on it and if it did the dealership would have handled it. It doesn’t hurt to shop around and get a payment plan to look at. If you buy used, still buy from a dealership. Then you know it’s been inspected properly. Dealerships aren’t as scummy as people would like to believe these days - there are a lot of rules and regulations that  actually protect the buyer. My brother works at a dealership so I have a pretty good insight to the inner workings.
