Is it time to get serious or am I reading to deeply into things?

Okay so lately me and my SO have been nonchalantly talking about the topic of marriage. We do a bunch of small things like two weeks ago he was telling me how much he really missed me and needed in Italy with him(he's in the military). I asked him what was 'big plan' to get me out there and he said things like I had to wait until we were face to face and he would let know in person, etc.That same day he flat out told me that he was going to marry me and move out there. However he tried to be slick and said it fast, I pretended not to hear him so would repeat it but he didn't and said i wasn't listening but I heard him loud and clear lol. And just the other day we were joking about our bachelor and bachelorette party. Is it time to start seriously discussing marriage or am I reading to deeply into the situation? And how would I let him know what kind of ring I want without being pushy because I don't want a traditional ring?
