Can they do this?
I met with human resources on Monday to discuss my maternity leave and make sure everything is all set for that. At the end, she asked me if I had any questions. I told her that I knew about the breastfeeding/pumping room in the office with the fridge for my breast milk and that I could use it whenever I needed. I told her that I was concerned as an employee who worked out of my car as a home visitor. I told her that as an employee REQUIRED to treat at least 25 children a week on the road, if I needed to drive back to the office (a 30 minute commute one way from my service area never mind pumping time and commute time back) to pump a few times a day, there would be no way I could also service 25 children in the same amount of time of 40 hours a week. So basically my question was would my caseload demands be reduced as a pumping mom to accommodate the time I need to pump. Her response was that if I felt my job would be impacted by the demands of motherhood, maybe I should have a discussion with my husband about finances so that I could reduce my hours and talk to my supervisor about reducing my hours (and my pay). She then began to lecture me about the balancing act of work and motherhood and that if nursing impacted my job I could always switch to formula. I was so shocked I didn't know what to say! What do you think?
