What isn’t about mother in laws and daughter in laws?

Question

Why isn’t that so many can’t get along but mother in laws and son in laws get along just fine and father in laws and daughter in laws usually get along just fine. 
Seriously question why do they often hate each other?

They often feel like they are competing for a rank in the man’s life as his favorite woman. Women are typically more aggressive/territorial/jealous than men, so that comes into play too. Women are usually meaner to each other than men are.

She doesmt want to follow our rules for our child and she sees me as competition for her sons affection instead of a partner in his life. So i dont bother trying more than the bare minimum to get along.

Thankfully my MIL is a wonderful person and she has accepted me into her family very willingly. She’s been a wonderful help and friend. But, in my experience with my dad’s mother (who I haven’t seen since I was about 20 due to how she treated my mother) and some of my friends, often the MIL can’t seem to accept that her son loves another woman (In sure it can happen the other way around too). It’s often jealousy I think. I’ve seen MIL disobey their DIL instructions about their kids, ridicule them for their choices in parenting/religion/etc and try to drive a wedge between their son and his wife. It’s terrible behaviour. 
My mum really suffered and my dad’s mother ended up destroying the relationship she had with my mum (which I think she wanted), but she also has no relationship with her son or myself and my siblings. She also destroyed my dad’s relationship with his siblings. My mum vowed to never let that happen with her sons. She’s been great and so accepting of my SILs. She just respects their marriage and then as people and they have a functional relationship even if they aren’t close. Some women fail to do that and it hurts so many people.

MIL and both SIL see me as the mean woman who took their boy away🤷‍♀️ hate the fact that he is a grown man with a baby on the way and doesnt rely on them for a every little thing and thinks for himself. Their manipulation doesn't work anymore. Usually MIL see it as their son being taken away. Not a DIL being added.

My MIL is bipolar and was abused as a child. I don't think she understands healthy family affection. She constantly wants to hold my husband/her son's hand (he's 29) whenever she's around him. She pouted at our engagement party when he sat next to me. She always says she should get to be next to him because I see him more. She almost acts like an ex rather than his mom.
She also tends to insult me, saying stuff like "you look so much better than the last time I saw you" or asking if I have a thyroid condition (I've always been slightly thicker, but still wear like a size 6 pant).
I've got sympathy for the lady, knowing a bit about what she has been through, but its tough dealing with someone who smothers people with attention. Most of the time she's around I just try and keep cool and stay civil.

I liked my MIL then she began calling me a slut and liar and that I ruined her sons life so now i just dont talk to her. I dont know why she doesn't like me but my parents think it is because it may feel like to her I took her son away from her. We got married and stationed in Okinawa. I tried to include her in as much as I can but she says her son doesn't talk to her as much... we are in different timezones it's a little difficult.

My daughter and I spent a full month with my in laws while my husband was away and it was great. We don’t live in the same state as them so that might be why since we don’t see each other everyday (but FaceTime the whole family every Weekend) but I get along great with my MIL FIL and all of my husbands family.
