Day 1 of period?

When do you count your period as the official first day? Sometimes it starts off with a faint or small amount of blood on the tissue, then it comes on fully the next day. What is “day 1”? The spotting or full on bleeding?

Most doctors usually say day 1 is the first full day of a full flow. 
However, you can count spotting as day 1 as well if you choose. The important thing is just to stay consistent. If you choose to count a full flow as day 1, make sure to do so for the following cycles as well.
