I'd suggest starting out with kits. These are some of the projects I've done and love how they turned out!

This second towel is nowhere near close to being done but will not have believe stitched on it, just flowers. They are going to be a gift

Some of the small kits you can pick up at Michael's or Hobby Lobby would be good to start with! I just finished my twin boys names for a surprise gift. Pinterest had some cute little projects as well, and YouTube probably has some beginner stuff on how to start projects
