Got mastitis from doing one bottle feeding daily?

Nicole

Our pediatrician recommended starting to feed our 4 week old one bottle of expressed breast milk for one of her night feedings to get her used to taking a bottle, as well as to let me get some extra sleep by having my husband take over one night feeding. We've been doing this the last couple nights and I always noticed my breasts were extra full when the next feeding rolled around as a result of skipping one breastfeeding session.

Last night was much worse though. About an hour or two after she got her bottle, my breasts were engorged and in pain with hard lumps. I also had the chills. By morning, the chills had transitioned to a high fever and my breasts have red areas. Mastitis.

Has anyone else had this happen? I didn't realize it was this easy to get mastitis and makes me want to give up on the once daily bottle. But maybe I am doing something wrong? Any advice would be appreciated!
