Should there be limits on what someone can name their child?

🙂🙃

So someone I know just named their baby Maleficent which means “causing harm or destruction, especially by supernatural means.” It got me thinking should countries that currently allow all names have stricter requirements for naming a baby? Many countries in the world currently have laws regarding this.

In Germany you must be able to tell the gender of the child by the first name and the name chosen must not negatively impact the well being of the child.

In Sweden the law reads, “first names shall not be approved if they can cause offence of can be supposed to cause discomfort for the one using it, or names which for some obvious reason are not suitable as a first name.”

In Denmark parents can choose from a list of only 7000 pre-approved names.

There are other countries as well that have similar laws regarding naming babies.

What do you think? Is it necessary to protect people from naming their children ridiculous things, or is it better to allow people to name their children anything?
