My boyfriend tends to throw me around, put his hands around my throat and and lightly hit me out of anger during arguments. He says our fighting is "especially bad" for him because he could go to jail. The thing is I haven't touched him back. Is he abusive? Or am I making him angry and putting this on myself?

No! That's 1000% abuse. It's not your fault it never is.  Are you holding a gun to his head? No you are not. There is no excuse to hit anyone. The whole "you made me mad" is manipulation. Omg I could have written this post. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this :( my partner is facing years for assaults currently. Some on me. I feel it’s my fault. I understand how you feel. It’s not your fault hun. Please know that. I’m trying to forgive myself and want so badly for my partner to be out and change but the thing is that is his choice and one push or choked to hard could kill you. It is that serious. I love my partner but I am playing with fire if I stay when he gets out. I have no idea what to do.

If you even have to question this you already know it's wrong. Does it feel wrong? Yes. He's abusing you physically and mentally. You know what you need to do. Smh...this subject is so frustrating because it's very difficult to convince a woman to leave a situation like this because they never leave until they're ready or u til it's too late. I could sit here and talk about it all night but I won't. 
You need to leave him. The sooner the better. And damnit stick up for yourself!!
