Always trust your gut.

Friday before last, (September 20th) I got what I thought was signs of a yeast infection. I was 18 almost 19 weeks pregnant and was just really exhausted. This would’ve been my 3rd one in my pregnancy, not including the BV I had at the beginning of my pregnancy. I called my doctor, and she said to come on in for some testing, during my appt 3 days later.

While at my appt we did the anatomy scan and found out we were having a boy (🥰) but the actual appointment was super rushed, and my doctor only focused on my pressure above my bladder. She didn’t really care to let me finish talking and said it sounded like I had a uti. I said well I’m itchy and I’m not having any of the uti symptoms. She made me pee in a cup and that was that. I got a call 3 days later that said I had a slight uti, and that they wanted me to take some antibiotics. Three days (Friday) into the antibiotics, the itching, the swelling, and complete discomfort was out of control. I called the office after hours and the on call doctor told me to come in on Monday. I agreed and she said if I had anything else concerning or just couldn’t handle it, to just come in to the walk in or er to be seen.

Fast word to yesterday, Sunday. I wake up to Braxton Hicks, and I’m like great. I can’t catch a break. However as the day continued on, I realized at about 3pm that they had been coming and going every 15-20 min. I timed them for an hour and then went to the bathroom. As I wiped there was blood in my discharge, and there was just gobs and gobs if it coming out. I panicked thinking this looks like my mucus plug, and I called the on call doctor. She said to come in right away to L&D. On the 30 min drive there, the contractions turned into intense, painful pressure. I get in the exam room, and the doctor pulls my underwear off to look at what was going on.

The first words out of her mouth was “wow that’s a lot of cervical mucus...” she at that point finished the exam, stood up and called my doctors office for the on call doctor. The on call came straight to the hospital, and took a look as well.

This is when they said “we believe this is the beginning of a weakening cervix.” They went on to say that I’m on strict bedrest, with minimum activity, and that every 2 weeks from now till delivery, I have to have a cervical ultrasound to make sure everything looks good.

They said that had I ignored it and continued to ignore the intense mucus, I could’ve lost my baby. I have an appt every week now to make sure I feel good and that my cervix looks good, and then every other week I have to have an ultrasound to make sure it’s still thick and where it should be.

Even if you feel silly, or feel like you’re being dramatic, if you question feel something isn’t right. Don’t write it off.
