What causes excess protein in your urine?

Having to do the 24hr urine test to see how much protein is being released. Just wondering what can cause you to have an excess amount? I've never heard of it before

It can be caused by dehydration too

it mainly means your kidneys aren't functioning properly. it can be a sign of preeclampsia but that's not always the case, my friend just had to do the 24hr protein urine test after the test came back negative for preeclampsia, they are still working on figuring it out.
