So many children seem to have autism now. I’d never really heard of it 10 years ago. It’s so sad. Do any of your children have it? Why is it so common now?

And btw, no parent of an autistic child, or any child with a disability for that matter, wants pity for their situation or to be labeled as “sad.” My son isn’t sad. He’s pretty damn amazing. He just processes information differently than you or me.

The disorder is not new, but it’s becoming more understood and diagnosed earlier. There is some debate on whether it’s more prevalent now or if it’s being diagnosed more. 
My son is on the spectrum, and we caught it pretty early, but his symptoms are not severe, and it would be easy to dismiss as “quirks,” and I think that may be what has happened a lot in the past. 
A poll in this setting is not exactly a good representation. But right now in the US, I think it’s 1 in 68 or something like that.

My daughter has autism and I will shout how fantastic she is, always. She isn’t sad. Having autism isn’t sad. She just sees the world differently than I do. It is challenge, yes. When she was diagnosed I felt my world had ended. 9 years on, I have an amazing daughter who I’m so proud of everyday of her life. She is so smart, she is kind and caring. She sees the best in everyone. I’m lucky to be her parent, she doesn’t need fixing, she is perfect just the way she is. It’s got more common because we have got better are diagnosing.

It's a spectrum and we now how to diagnosis it better, earlier, and more effectively. There tons of people that where never diagnosed because well we used to just write them off. Sad. But wonderful for future generations that diagnosis, understanding and acceptance is becoming more common. 💙 Sadly we still have parents that think autism is caused by vaccines or that they can some how "cure" their children by "Detoxing" them. 😥

Its not that its more common now, its that now there have been more progress in research being done for autism so people know more about it and are able to know what signs to look for and can diagnose people more easily. Which is a good thing because these kids are able to get the help they need.

My daughter doesn’t have it, but my nephew is non-verbal autistic. It’s not sad. I love him just as much as I would if he didn’t have it. There are times when I wish he didn’t have it, because it would be easier for him but he’s perfect the way he is.
