If he called it off, cheated etc., etiquette says you keep the ring. That is part of the original promise of the ring, as a lifetime commitment. If it was mutual or your decision, give it back.

My understanding is the engagement ring is a promise to marry. If you don’t marry you give it back. If you did marry it’s yours to keep.

Honestly, the way that I see it is that he gave it to you, which means now it’s your ring. I’d personally sell it and keep the money 🤷🏻‍♀️
An ex of mine gave me a promise ring and wouldn’t take it back when I asked him if he wanted it back, so from experience I doubt he’d want it back anyways.

The ring would go first, if he was the one to break it off and leave me. Why the hell would I want to keep it. If it was mutual, and he said I can keep it, perhaps I would. If it was me who leaves him, I’d give it back.

I said no to an engagement 5 years ago and tried giving the ring back. He was in denial because he didn't let me give it back! Like "keep it just in case you change your mind" kind of attitude. But generally I would say yes to giving the ring back.
