Still have my dads maiden name never married and my dad was adopted to his moms sister so it’s his aunts husbands last name they are both dead and they never had much of any relationship with me

My sister had to notify the father even though he’d been out of the picture with no contact for years. He showed up at court but had no case to stand on so their surnames were changed but he knows what they are. She also had to prove that it was in their best interest but the rules may be different in different places.

I was a domestic abuse program director and counselor for 12 years. You can change your name, but legally you'd have to notify the father. If you married someone else, it's a little easier to change your name. Without marriage, it's a whole application process and typically you have to appear before a judge and they'll enforce notifying the father (if the father is claimed via the birth certificate or child support)
You could try not putting his name on the birth certificate, don't pursue child support, and try to disappear. Get off social media, change your number etc and hope he never tries to find you. But I don't know the situation eg if the child was born already, if he's involved etc

I would do pretty much anything to protect my child! As the other ladies have said, the legalities might not be so clear cut but I’m not so sure on the rules personally. 
I do think I’d struggle changing my first name though. Not only because it’s MY name but also because I’d have a hard time remembering to answer to something different! I’d consider changing the spelling though or shortening it to a nickname etc. Like going form Isabelle to Isobel, Emily to Emma-Leigh or Elizabeth to Beth. I don’t know if it’s a possibility with your name but it would make it harder to find you but you would get to keep your first name.

As long as are legally covered so that it can't come back and benefit him later do it. Its a big decision but its your job to protect you and your kids, so I say do it.
