Pink Ribbon Culture is Gaslighting women?

CC’s been slow so I’ve actually decided to post. Below is an article I found, one that voiced a lot of my thoughts that I didn’t know how to articulate, and would love to hear your opinions on.

I agree with this. Pink washing is a scourge. I’m also tired of “awareness” campaigns for things like breast cancer everyone is already totally aware of.

The fact that even during breast cancer awareness months a big focus is on sexualising female breasts (men get breast cancer too but I don’t see much talk about that) is disgusting. I’ve had some of the people closest to me fight breast cancer, some won, some lost, there’s never anything upbeat or sexy or fun or pink about it.

Wow, *slow clap* that was actually amazing. 
That article really called out the bullshit around breast cancer awareness & how corporate interests use it, and how inappropriate it is to ever sexualize a disease... especially in a way that might make people who had it feel worse... how inconsiderate and tone deaf. 
And my favorite part of all, it brought awareness to the fact that more black women die from breast cancer than white women. We need to learn why and put a stop to it. I've heard subconscious prejudices against both women and black people, can cause them not to be listened to as much in medical settings, leading to an increased chance of death. That's not right and we all know it. If it's true, we need to put a stop to these prejudices.

Breast cancer has the lowest death rate over all of all the cancers (when diagnosed early) out there. It also gets the most attention and most funding. 
Yet prostate and ovarian cancer have the highest death rates, lowest diagnosis rates and most people do not have symptoms until the later stages. 
Yes it is gross that corporations and that sexualize and use this disease to their advantage. It is also disgusting to see how sexualized breasts are, if you are more worried about saving the breasts and not the woman who has them life.

I just dont get the point of “spreading awareness” about breast cancer... wish companies that went pink would actually donate. I think explaining how to examine your breasts is good, but none of this “awareness” is educational, just about “hey breast cancer exists”

I think it’s an interesting take on it.
My opinion is that corporations are going to do what makes them money.  If charities benefit from them, then that’s a bonus.
I don’t think it’s necessarily gaslighting, because I don’t expect them to do anything other than place the donated money in the hands of people who will use it for research, care, etc.  Basically, I don’t expect them to care. 
I feel their fundraising is where my expectations begin and end.  
That being said, when tactics the article talks about stop selling, they’ll stop being used.  So, perhaps it’s up to the individual consumer to choose wisely where and how the money is donated?

"Breast cancer awareness" is a scam. The majority of the $ doesn't go to research, funding medicine or patients. I refuse to contribute. It's obvi an industry and money making scheme.

I don’t understand how it’s gaslighting. Exploitation? Maybe. But not sure about gaslighting. Unless someone can explain it further for me. As for awareness, it’s to encourage women to get regular checks. I know here it does help. Some places even give free screenings
